When Xi Jinping became president of China we imagined a more open Chinese society.

Xi Jinping became the general secretary of the Communist Party of China, the chairman of the Central

Military Commission and the president of the People's Republic of China. During his tenure there has

been a significant increase in censorship and mass surveillance, significant deterioration

in human rights and the removal of term limits for the president. To some he's considered the most

powerful and influential person in the world. To others he's a totalitarian dictator.

My guest today speak candidly about their experiences with human rights in China.
