Summary

Changing your life is always a difficult task, but it’s nearly impossible without accepting personal responsibility. Dr. Henry Cloud gets into what you should and shouldn’t take responsibility for and how this awareness can transform your life and the options you have. Written question: Lately I feel like my attention and ability to focus is being stolen away from me. There are so many distractions, from email to messaging apps, and group chats, and social media, and all of the other notifications. Are we meant to be able to manage all of this communication? Jill is setting "healthy boundaries" but doesn't want to sacrifice helping the people she cares about. Tamars seeks advice on how to look at a failed dating relationship. Betty is having trouble with some new people at her church that are questioning her integrity and spirituality.

Having trouble setting boundaries? Are you worried that boundaries go against your Christianity? Dr. Henry Cloud lays the foundation for how to build and maintain healthy boundaries that align with Christian principles. 0:20.3

Now, this is a big topic that gets people really upset, really, really upset for a number

0:28.4

of reasons.

0:30.8

One of the big reasons is that, you know, there's a difference between, which I'm going to go into in a second,

0:39.3

0:46.8

But I remember, and I'm going to have to ask our in-house philosopher,

0:52.9

0:55.7

But I think it was, I think it was Kafka that said something like.

1:01.9

I'm going to botch the words on this, but the idea was, he said, I went out into the

1:10.3

night sky. I looked up at the universe and I said, I went out into the night sky.

1:10.9

I looked up at the universe and I said, I exist.

1:14.6

To which the universe responded, that evokes no sense of responsibility in me.

1:23.0

Well, there's some issues in that statement. But the reason I like it is that we come into life um not having a lot

1:37.0

of responsibility right you got to pretty much just show up and we you know if you're hungry

1:42.6

you don't have to take responsibility for

1:44.5

your hunger and go to the fridge and get something to eat somebody else takes responsibility

1:49.5

to you really um there's a responsibility for others and a responsibility to others.

2:07.2

But your caretaker, your mom, your dad, your, whoever it was there, when you're upset,

2:11.4

they see that as, that's my problem because they are a parent.

2:12.9

They're taking responsibility for that. Well, gradually over this course of something we call maturity,

2:19.6

there is a gradual offloading and hopefully a requirement for the child
