It was a gray, mild evening off the coast of Jamaica in early October 1679.

The light was failing and the humid air had been cut by a day of steady rainfall.

Four ships lay at anchor rolling slightly and quietly.

The men sauntered around the deck enjoying the cooling air and refreshing breeze. Some sailors repaired sails or tarred lengths of hemp rope.

Gunners examined their guns for any sign of rust or damage,

while the least lucky among them worked at the pumps below decks.

Most of the men relaxed, though. They had full holds, full bellies, and casks of rum or wine at their disposal. Soon they'd have full purses. They were sleeping or sipping at that wine, some of them were playing cards or singing,

and even those at work had a cup by their side and weren't too concerned with the task at hand.

Nobody dared sing too loudly though.

They kept their merriment in check.

Even here, at rest, every ship had a man who wasn't drinking up in the rigging. He was the sharpest-eyed man on board, and he kept those eyes trained on the harbor at Port Royal.

The city was a beacon of lamplight in the distance and even out here they could hear the sound of song and laughter echoing across the ways. Sometimes the crack of an occasional flintlock shot cut through it all, but soon the sounds of men and

women enjoying themselves returned.

Those in the rigging were watching the harbor for any sign of a vessel heading in their direction.
