Summary

The show turns one year old this month! We have a lil' party in the stude with all our fave BuzzFeed big sister types β€” Nabiha Syed, badass lawyer extraordinaire, Bim Adewunmi, thirst queen and BuzzFeed culture writer, and Tracy Clayton, host of Another Round and podcast genius. We talk about how discussions around being Muslim in America have evolved (or not) in the past year, how to be a good ally, self care, and the pressures of being a public voice.

Hi everyone, it's Amidale Yaqbo from See Something, Say Something, and it's our birthday. Yay!

0:08.0

Happy birthday!

0:10.0

Yay!

If you see something, you better, you better say something.

0:20.0

Nothing at all. Nothing at all. I mean, it's like not my birthday, it's the show's birthday. It's the show's birthday. It came out in October of 2016, and a lot has happened since then.

0:31.8

So for this episode, I'm going to bring in all my favorite Big Sister BuzzFeed types to reflect, celebrate, and

0:40.4

talk about, you know, life and stuff.

0:49.8

So joining me right now are Bim Adiwanmi. She's a senior culture writer at BuzzFeed and also the host of an upcoming podcast project.

0:59.8

Am I allowed to reveal the name?

1:01.4

I mean, why the hell not? No, no, you know, I don't think so.

1:05.0

It is in fact a secret. Do not say that.

1:06.8

Okay. Anyhow, she has a podcast that's coming out with Nicole Perkins, which is going to be amazing. Welcome, Bim. And I'm also joined by Nabeha Sayyad, who is Assistant General Counsel at BuzzFeed, you know. And she does a lot of stuff on free speech and is a badass. Both these people are badasses who I admire so much and inspire my work. We love you. Oh my god. We admire you too. This is wonderful.

1:30.5

I'm so happy to be with you guys right now. I'm so happy to be here. We're, you know, we haven't

1:37.6

done halal or not for a while, but I think it's time to bring it back. Do you guys want to play?

1:43.6

I do, but I think everything is halal except for Donald Trump and Harvey Weinstein. So my answers are easy. So we're going to play a game of halal or not. If you don't remember that game, it's pretty simple. I just give the guests a word or phrase, and they have to tell us whether they think it's halal or not, and why.

2:03.2

All right, let's start with Nabiha, aunties.

2:08.0

Aunties are halal.

2:09.4

Antis are, you know, as I'm growing into an auntie myself, I feel just more sympathy towards them.

2:16.2

I mean, obviously, there are some evil aunties,

2:18.9

and I hope I live to see the revenge that they should get. That is my prayer. Amen. I think

2:27.2

aunties are great. I love aunties. I think even the evil ones deserve a place in our culture.

2:33.8

They have a backstory. Like any villain, they have an origin. They always do. Something happened. There was some trauma. What turned you, Auntie? When did you become evil? I want American shows just called Aunties. Like, just stop focusing on these young children. Only the aunties matter right now. And every episode is a flashback to the thing that turned her.
