Today we're saluting a pair of men, Rex Stout, creator of the Erassable Orchid

collector Gormand and Brilliant Detective Niro Wolf and Sydney Green Street, the heavy-set Oscar

nominee who memorably played Wolf in a single radio season.

Both men have December birthdays.

Stout was born December 1st, 1886,

and Green Street entered the world on December 27th, 1879.

This week will hear a pair of radio adventures starring

Green Street as Stout's most celebrated literary creation. It was a match made in casting heaven.

Green Street was perfect as Wolf, the 300 pound detective who loathed any type of physical activity,

to the point that he hated to leave his comfortable brownstone even while working on a case.

Instead, he'd send out his leg man, Archie Goodwin, a street smart sleuth who had an eye for the ladies and who could handle the more rough and tumble aspects of the job. Green Street was famous to audiences for his role as the Fat Man in the Maltese Falcon and his other haughty but

secretly sneaky types in movies like Casablanca. He could play the many moods of

Wolf, indignant and Huffy, as well as Cajian Sly.
