All right, folks, welcome back to another episode of the Human Performance Outliers podcast.

0:14.1

I'm your host, Zach Bitter, and today I have a guest interview for you.

0:17.7

Today's guest is Andy Blow.

0:19.8

So I became familiar with Andy years ago, actually,

0:23.3

as I was exploring some hydration type things that were relative to my racing and training

0:30.6

for that matter. So you have a situation, especially in Ultramarathon, where staying hydrated

0:36.4

or at least reasonably hydrated becomes a big

0:38.7

part of the process or a variable that if you can get right can very much influence performance. So

0:45.1

actually last summer, I've talked about this before in the podcast, I had a friend Rimo

0:51.8

reach out to me an offer to do a sweat test.

0:55.6

And what that basically is is there are these like machines and you get strapped up to it.

1:01.9

It's super non-invasive.

1:03.6

It just draws a little bit of sweat off of you and then analyzes it and it will spit

1:07.9

out a number and that number will reflect the amount of electrolytes

1:11.0

that you lose for every liter of sweat. And with that information, you can start running the numbers.

1:17.8

If you know then how many liters of sweat you lose in X climate, you can start to calculate

1:22.7

what your needs are going to be in a training session or in a race session and also determine like essentially

1:28.5

how long it might take before you start seeing some of the negative ramifications of dehydration.

1:33.7

So the reason I wanted to have Andy on is Andy is actually the guy who made that machine.

1:39.4

He has been just someone who has been in the whole hydration, electrolyte world for quite some time now.

1:47.0

And that is partly, as we'll get into in the podcast, an issue that he was dealing with when he was
