All right, everybody, welcome back to another episode of the Human Performance Outliers podcast.

0:15.1

I am your host, Zach Bitter.

0:16.6

And today I have a solo episode for you where I'm going to dive into a topic that has

0:22.3

gotten some momentum online in the last couple weeks. And it has to do with performance

0:29.1

related to nutrition. So an ongoing conversation that I've had on this podcast that has

0:35.7

also taken place to some degree within the endurance world

0:39.0

is this idea of like a low carbohydrate ketogenic diet versus a more traditional model

0:45.9

of a moderate to high carbohydrate diet and how that impacts performance.

0:51.5

It's interesting because I think it requires a lot of nuance, partly because when we

0:57.3

use the word endurance, we're using that as an umbrella term to cover such a wide range of events.

1:05.0

It almost becomes a question that requires further investigation.

1:15.8

And it's going to be a big difference when we're talking about, say,

1:21.4

endurance at the, like, shorter end of the spectrum versus the longer end of the spectrum.

1:29.2

Or, in other words, like, say, a three-kilometer race versus a effort where you see how far you can run in 24 hours or something like that.

1:30.7

So that's where the conversation has gone a lot of times is like, well, what are we talking

1:35.7

about when we say endurance?

1:37.3

One thing, though, that tends to be a common theme is that as you get into these shorter

1:42.8

endurance events that require a moderate

1:45.8

to higher intensity for that particular event, we see a reduction in performance when someone

1:53.6

implants a low carbohydrate ketogenic diet in a lot of the research to date. So most of this stuff requires further

2:02.3

investigation, or at least it's called for that. And recently a study came out that looked actually
