Summary

Before we jump into this week's episode, I want to direct your attention to what I mention in the first few minutes of the show. If you've followed me for some time, you know that I have a firm belief that as a white person, it's not okay to teach personal development and wellness without addressing and breaking down your own unconscious biases, as well as speaking up about it. No one is free until we are all free and we must use our privilege for good.  I want to make it clear what I believe in both personally and professionally, where I'm at right now, and what's in store here at YKAL. The email I mention that's coming has already been written and you can find it HERE. Have you ever considered the deeper meaning behind personal development and the self-help industry as a whole? This episode with guest Andréa Ranae is guaranteed to get you thinking (and talking), and what she talks about affects everyone, not just coaches or someone in the self-help industry. Andréa is a coach herself who wrote a blog post last summer titled, Why the Self-Help Industry Isn’t Changing The World, which went viral and has been shared thousands of times since. She believes there is a disconnect between our own industry and the work of social justice, and even offers a Coaching As Activism Program to her clients. In this episode you’ll hear: Why did her post really strike a nerve with coaches and healers alike? (5 minutes and 15 seconds)  The reasons why the work of changing the world doesn’t stop at an individual (8:15) Why the lessons of the Law of Attraction are laden with privilege - if you are not systematically oppressed (8:51) Why focus on your identity but not how we have been impacted by dehumanizing messages about women? (16:39) How limiting beliefs are instilled in you and why you have to “name it to tame it!” (19:46) As Andréa shares, “do-gooders” of the world often don’t want to bring “politics” and the stuff that’s happening around us into their work, but it’s something we can hide from. Her opinion is that self-love and self-care will not change the world, and I’m interested to hear from you about your thoughts on our conversation! Learn more about your ad choices. Hey there, Ask Hakers. I wanted to jump in real quick before we officially start the show.

0:34.6

And no, this is not an ad. I hope that you will stick with me here for just a

0:38.3

couple of minutes. And I just wanted to mention something. You know, it's no surprise that things

0:44.5

have been hard with COVID over the last few months. And it's no surprise, I think, to any of you,

0:52.8

that we have a huge problem with racism in this

0:56.2

country, and it hasn't just been a few months. I'm thinking about the black and brown women

1:04.6

who listen to this show and who read my books, and it's absolutely not enough for me to just think of you. And I used to

1:15.1

talk about this a little bit more, but it's been a while. It's been a couple of years. I think,

1:20.7

you know, after the election and when things got really heated, I dove into my own work and was

1:26.6

very fired up about it in the beginning,

1:28.2

then took some steps back from talking about it as I realized it is not time for me to talk

1:35.1

about it from a place of education, but yet a time for me to do my own anti-racism work and really

1:43.4

think about what my values over here are from someone who runs a

1:48.2

company, the values of your kick-ass life, as well as what are my values on a very personal

1:52.9

level, which they are pretty much the same. And I'll be honest with you, I've gotten complacent

1:59.4

and did a lot of work and then let my foot off the gas.

2:06.1

And that's not acceptable. That's not how unlearning works. That's not how relearning something else

2:14.2

works. I tell you guys all the time about how important it is to be

2:18.9

vigilant and pay attention to your own inner critic, to your own shame triggers, to where you

2:26.8

need to set boundaries, all of these things that are so important for you to live your own
