Hello again, patrons, and thank you for supporting the History of the Crusades podcast.

Last time we saw the new leader of the Anabaptists of Munster, Jan von Leiden,

institute a new system of governance inside the city.

The election of councillors and mayors was abandoned in favour of the appointment of 12 elders,

men who were appointed by Jan von Leiden and were directly answerable to him.

Bernard Kniepidolling was appointed as the chief enforcer of justice, a position which promised to be a busy one,

as Jan von Leiden also introduced a bunch of new laws which attracted the death penalty if breached.

The citizens of Munster, who had been attracted to the city

due to the religious freedom it offered,

now found themselves anything but free,

at risk of being executed for crimes such as engaging in idle conversation.

Meanwhile, things were hotting up outside the city walls.

The Bishop Prince, France von Valdon, had ordered a small section of the outer moat surrounding the Udafelder Gate in the northern part of the walls to be drained,
