Last time, we examined the rise of a new radical religion, Anabaptism, in the 1520s. Adherence to the

Anabaptist religion were kind of anarchic free thinkers who refused to be told what to think or what to do.

Instead, the Anabaptists determined for themselves what aspects of religion they would follow, what laws they would obey, and what taxes they would pay.

As more and more people jumped on the Anabaptist wagon, the church and state pushed back violently against them in 1529.

Persecuting, punishing, and in many cases executing those who followed the Anabaptist faith.

Instead of eliminating the new religion, though, this had the effect of forcing it underground, and many of the people who remained faithful to the Anabaptist

creed became even more radical in their views. One such radical man was Melheur Hoffman,

Hoffman was born and raised in southern Germany,

but after his conversion to the Anabaptist faith,
