Summary

TJ graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 1999 with a degree in Behavioral Sciences. Over the next several years he attended NATO’s premier fighter pilot training course, EURO-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) and became an F-16 fighter pilot. He served overseas in Korea and deployed to Iraq as a combat flight lead, and was recognized as the Hill Air Force Base Flight Lead of the Year in 2005. Later he served as an instructor and evaluator pilot at ENJJPT, overseeing student training and managing several operational components of the program. During that time he also earned an MBA from Texas A&M - Commerce. He retired after more than 20 years of service in 2019. TJ is also a Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt and the Vice President of the “We Defy Foundation.”

On this episode, TJ discusses his time in the military as a fighter pilot, what he enjoyed most about being a fighter pilot, why he started Jiu-Jitsu, the importance of Jiu-Jitsu and a community for military veterans, how he got involved with the “We Defy Foundation,” the importance of research to assist with funding, the mission of the “We Defy Foundation," how "We Defy" has impacted the lives of military veterans, learning how to deal with failure through Jiu-Jitsu, and how stopping competing can improve your Jiu-Jitsu. If you guys are familiar with them with the work they do or if you've ever seen me wear a Weedify rash garter t-shirt in some of my YouTube videos and things like that.

He is the vice president there currently. He's evolved here. And they are a

0:22.1

nonprofit organization that supports veterans through jih Tzu and what we do. And again,

0:29.4

it's been really impactful to a lot of their members and to a lot of the people they work with.

0:34.2

And we're going to have him on the podcast today to one, talk about him, his, you know, his involvement in Jujits, which is always fun.

0:40.2

And he's also, he was a fighter pilot, which for me, I'm kind of a geek when it comes to aviation.

0:44.7

Like, I, you know, I didn't want to take up the whole podcast there.

0:47.3

I could probably, like, and he probably doesn't want to talk about it that much either, but I could probably start asking him really, like, technical questions that

0:54.2

nobody else would understand, but that I'd be, like, geeking out about. But nonetheless, you know,

0:58.5

we talk a little bit about that, and then we get into the actual podcast with him and talk about

1:02.0

we defy what they do, jitzu, the whole thing, and lots of cool, interesting sort of perspectives, perspectives again coming from a person who was a fighter pilot which means you know he's kind of a

1:10.8

you know the kind of the the the kind of the the the the sort of the top yeah of the of the

1:18.2

rankings there as far as what he's doing because it's a very competitive field to get into

1:22.3

and then getting into jihitsu and you know some of the things he's learned both from both the disciplines,

1:28.2

both the fighter pilot and also jihitsu. And so hopefully you guys enjoy the podcast and get

1:32.3

something from it. Also, big thanks to our sponsors for helping make the podcast happen.

Charlotte's Web, CBD, if you've never tried CBD or maybe if you've used different products

1:40.5

before from different companies, check out Charlotte's Web. A random story for you. I thought

1:45.9

that was funny. I had a friend of mine came into town and he was, you know, listening to the

1:52.4

podcast one time. It was like, hey, man, like, you know, I was talking about these CBD gummies and,

1:55.7

you know, I like taking CBD at nighttime for sleep. I tend to think that it gives me a benefit
