It was 1890 when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote these words for Sherlock Holmes, in the classic tale, The Sign of the Four.

This simple line of reasoning would form the bedrock of deductive reasoning in fiction for the next century.

It sounds clean, logical, almost comforting.

The idea that truth is simply what's left standing after everything else has been ruled out.

But real life is rarely as neat as fiction.

In January 2001, in a quiet subdivision on the outskirts of a college town in Georgia,

a young woman was murdered in her own home. The killer set the place on fire to cover his tracks, so police did what homes

would prescribe. They eliminated the impossible. They generated tens of thousands of pages of

reports, conducted hundreds of interviews, and when they were done, they were left with nothing,

and the case went cold for more than 20 years.

Then, in 2003, the case was re-examined using the latest DNA technology, and there was a match.

A name that had never once appeared in 23 years of investigative files.
