Summary

Aleksandr holds basically all the ultramarathon World Records from distance run in 6-hours all the way up to 24-hours, which include both the 100km and 100 mile World Records. He is a World Champion at the 24-Hour event, and won the historic Spartathlon. He began running later in life to lose weight and kick a drinking and smoking habit, and is now considered one of the greatest ultramarathon runners of all time.

All right, folks, welcome back to another episode of the Human Performance Outliers podcast.

0:14.2

I'm your host, Zach Bitter.

0:15.5

And today I have an exciting guest interview for you.

0:20.0

Today's guest is Alexander Sorokin. So for those who

0:24.4

aren't aware, Alexander Sorokin has been on an absolute tear the last couple of years,

0:30.4

breaking all sorts of records in the ultra marathon world. His main focus are more runable events.

0:36.9

So he targets a lot of timed events from six hours,

0:39.9

12 hours, 24 hours to some of the more standard distances like 100 kilometers and 100 miles and

0:45.9

things like that. Since he started focusing on ultramarathon running, he has had an incredible journey. So a lot of people have learned about him

0:57.3

in the last couple of years, but he has actually been around for a little bit. And I even learned

1:02.0

some stuff that I was unaware of while doing some research for this episode. I didn't know.

1:08.1

But at the time when he was kind of first getting into the sport, we were both racing the world 100 kilometer championships in 2014.

1:16.9

And then again, in 2015, for those who want some context on that, in 2014, I finished six set that championships.

1:26.0

I believe he was 33rd. The following year, I had to drop out.

1:31.5

I got actually rushed to the hospital. I had some sort of like reaction to presumably like the

1:36.0

pollen or something in the air there. And he ended up making a big improvement from his prior

1:40.9

year's race and finishing in the top 10 there. With that said,

1:45.6

Sorokin was just getting started at that point. His journey is incredible. He actually was a

1:52.1

fairly competitive kayaker earlier in his life and eventually stepped away from that for work

1:59.2

related stuff and ended up gaining a bunch of weight.

2:02.8

He got up to about 100 kilometers.
