Here in the Green Mountains, it was peak foliage season, when maple leaves turned crimson and beech trees glow gold.

By 11.20 p.m., local resident Christopher Page was tucked inside his home, keeping warm against the crisp bottom air.

It was a very quiet evening, and I was in my room watching TV, and it was approximately 1120,

1125.

I was watching the Channel 3 late night news. I heard the sound of his truck engine start.

His house is directly across from mine. My bedroom's on the front of the house. So it's something that I heard quite often.

Christopher wasn't particularly a nosy neighbor, but he noticed that the man across the street had been keeping unusual hours for the past couple of nights.

I heard the vehicle start up and like I said, I was watching TV.

It sounded as though he took off at a high rate of speed, just by the sound of the motor, you know.

It sounded like he took off very abruptly, so it kind of alarmed me.

Getting out of bed, Christopher went to his window and peered outside.
