Summary

Trevor Thomas was an adrenaline junkie in his mid-thirties when he started to lose his sight. Six months later, he was completely blind. After a spell of understandable bitterness, Trevor refused to allow his new circumstances to define him. Approaching the logistical issues with a precise attention to detail, he set out on a new journey. This has led him to hike nearly 20,000 miles in the past ten years. His story is inspiring, as is his mission to empower blind and visually impaired young adults while challenging the misconceptions the sighted community has toward the blind. He founded Team FarSight Foundation, Inc. to achieve this goal in 2014. Since 2012, Trevor has been accompanied on his many adventures by his remarkable companion, Tennile.     There are many ways to contact Trevor; Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, as well as through his website. He and Tennile continue to inspire those of us who often take our physical well-being for granted.     Jessa is now in her first 100 miles and enjoying every minute. Don't forget to follow her blog, which you can reach here. I caught up with her a couple of times this week.   James Claiborne, another guest from a previous episode, shares his pre-hike concerns. They proved to be groundless as he reveled in the companionship of the trail.   Please consider being a patron of the show. Go to patreon.com/mightyblue to support me. Thanks

Welcome back to the show. We're already up to episode number 29 and this week I'm featuring

0:31.8

somebody whose story, when I heard it, I could hardly believe. Trevor Thomas has hiked about 12,000 miles since 2006.

0:42.2

While this is a heck of a long way, others have done as many miles.

0:46.5

No, what makes Trevor's story so remarkable is the fact that since the age of 35,

0:52.1

he has been totally and utterly blind. When I think of the AT,

0:58.2

one of the main things that I recall are the dreadful roots that always seem to jump up at me

1:03.3

and drag me down onto the trail. I could see, yet I'd often misplace my footing and find

1:08.8

myself eating dirt once more.

1:17.5

How Trevor coped with just the roots, I can't imagine, but as you'll hear, he had to cope with so much more.

1:21.8

Trevor will be on a minute or so. You'll be truly amazed by him.

1:29.3

With Jess are at last on the trail, I called up with her a couple of times this week and as you'll hear, she's embracing the challenge.

1:35.8

Another previous guest, James Claiborne or Buchanan, is this week's Fear and Loathing guest.

1:43.7

He had some interesting comments about overstepping boundaries and to be honest, I overstepped my boundaries just by setting foot on the trail.

1:47.0

Now, here's Trevor Thomas.

1:58.5

Okay, I'd like to say hi this morning to Trevor Thomas.

1:59.5

Hi, Trevor, how are you?

2:02.1

I'm doing great. Thanks for having me, Steve.

2:10.0

Well, thanks for being on. And you do something which I regard as just extraordinary.

2:21.8

You've been hiking as a blind man for about 10 years now. And I know you only went blind in 2006. Can you tell us about that and how that came about? Well, that was, I would say, probably one of the darkest times of my life.

2:29.3

I think at this point they still don't really know exactly what happened. I went in thinking that my eyes

2:36.9

were, they were getting a little worse. I figured I was middle age, having trouble reading,
