Summary

Cedric G. Johnson, author of After Black Lives Matter, joins Bad Faith for part two of his two hour conversation with Briahna about why the movement fell short, his beef with police abolitionists, and why a class lens is necessary to understand the roots and trajectory of the policing crisis. (Part two is where the conversation really matures into something quite useful. Let us know what you think).

like the way I talk about these things and I actually end up in my own work. I think people have

0:04.3

the perception that somehow I don't, you know, I'm not dealing with racist things on a regular basis,

0:09.7

but but I totally am and I'm complaining about them and I'm, you know, dealing with things regarding

my own, you know, adult kids now, people in my family, right, there's never a limited quantity of

insults and counters having to deal with people in different contexts that certainly reeks of,

just old school racism, right? So I'm not of the mind and say that that's not happening.

0:40.7

for me, right? So like, there's been moments where I've had people in my, you know, I've been stopped

1:07.9

to Chicago to Tokyo, right? Twice in Rochester, but once in the Chicago airport. Yeah, you can't

1:14.3

be bearded beige and flying internationally after I live in that was your mistake. Right, right,

1:19.8

but even in the domestic context, right? Many times stopped by cops and then let go, right? So pure

1:25.2

harassment stopped, right? So I'm not, I wouldn't be the one to deny the presence of that sort of

1:30.6

racial targeting and discrimination, but how does it matter for me? For some of us, you know,

1:37.6

even when we stop by a cop, you know, if we harassed or wrongly charged with something, we have the,

1:43.1

the, you know, the resources, the networks, I have lawyers with friends, I can talk to them,

1:47.6

dial them up quickly. That's the different situation and perhaps these kids who win this,

1:52.8

this conflict with this white woman, right? I mean, I hope that they lower it up and then they

1:57.8

can deal with it. At one point, they said that they couldn't afford a lawyer. I think in the woman

2:01.1

in the sister's TikTok, she said, she got a lawyer. There was like a fund raised in her benefit,
