Summary

Chewy and Eugene discuss whether Gi Jiu-Jitsu is more technical than No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu and the dangers of "Jiu-Jitsu Dogma."

We discuss what being “more technical” means, martial arts dogma, using leg locks for self-defense, thoughts on Bruce Lee’s philosophies on martial arts, being an open book when learning techniques, the differences between Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, using martial arts compared to a gun for self-defense, how “Basic Jiu-Jitsu” has changed over the years, whether Gi or No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is better for older grapplers, and different BJJ styles.

What up, guys. Welcome to another edition of the Chiu-Jitsu podcast today. Eugene and I are going to talk about a question that was sent to me, and in particular talk about the idea that this person sent me, which his coach told him, which is, is the ghee more technical than no-gey? This is what this person said. You listening this, you might have

0:21.6

particular sort of like sort of a knee-jerk reaction to that statement. Maybe it irritates you.

0:26.9

Maybe you're like, yep, it is more technical, or maybe you're kind of indifferent. But we're also

0:31.7

going to talk about that in, not religious, but martial arts dogma. And again, it's something that I think a lot of times

0:38.7

jih Tzu practitioners like to think that they're not involved in this,

0:43.0

but they are.

0:44.4

And a lot of times you see this dogmatic approach in jiu-jitsu in multiple different places

0:48.1

and in multiple different ways and we'll talk about it.

0:50.5

And you can use this as just an idea to chew on, of course, but especially with

0:55.8

the dogma part. I'll talk about some of the dangers of getting too dogmatic about Jitsu, because

1:00.9

I've seen it happen. And so I'll share some of this with you and just sort of from the vantage

1:05.2

point of maybe helping you just make sure that you steer clear of it because you don't want to be

1:08.5

like that. Big thanks to our sponsors for helping make this podcast happen.

test that you would be safe, right, which is a pretty stringent testing regime. Now obviously,
