Summary

In the summer of 1842, Joseph Smith was busy. He implemented the endowment, entered plural marriages, dealt with John C. Bennett’s fallout, and went into hiding from an attempted extradition. BYU’s Jordan Watkins is an editor of the Joseph Smith Papers publication covering this pivotal time. In this episode, we learn learn about events from this demanding period of Joseph’s life, but also how those events gave rise to his revelations, showing the beauty of an eternal that encompasses the temporal.

0:05.2	There is this really fabulous tool that I like to use when I'm researching different
0:09.8	doctrinal subjects.
0:11.2	It's called the General Conference Corpus, maybe you've heard of it.
0:15.6	It's available to everybody for free on the web, just Google it if you're interested.
0:20.7	This corpus allows you to quickly and easily search talks from all of general conference
0:26.0	from 1851 down to the present.
0:28.9	And it quickly and cleanly breaks down and normalizes the data into really easily readable

0:55.4	While a quick search shows that in the 2010s, the word grace was used three times as much
1:01.8	as in the 1980s and five times as much as 100 years earlier in the 1910s.
1:08.5	But on the other hand, if you search a phrase like the word of wisdom, you will see that
1:13.0	teachings on the word of wisdom have recently declined.
1:17.0	They were given 10 times as much in general conference 100 years ago than they are today.
1:23.0	They peaked during prohibition in the 1920s and 1930s.
1:28.3	References to pornography, however, jumped dramatically in the 2000s as the internet hit
1:33.6	popular mainstream.
