Summary
This episode tackles a question almost every parent of teens faces:
What do you do when you don’t agree with how your kids want to dress?
From short shorts to oversized hoodies (and everything in between), Cynthia and Dr. Ken walk through how to handle these moments without turning your home into a constant control battle.
Dr. Ken unpacks why these conflicts are often less about clothes and more about ownership and independence, and how to set boundaries early while clearly moving toward giving your teen more freedom. You’ll be encouraged to say, “This will be your decision soon—but not yet,” and notice how that changes the conversation.
They also talk through real-life pushback, how to approach piercings, what to do when your teen makes a decision without your permission, and why consequences only work if you’re actually willing to follow through.
The goal isn’t to control every choice—it’s to prepare your teen to make wise ones when you’re no longer there to weigh in.

| 0:00.0 | Welcome back to Feeding the Mouth to Bight You, a weekly podcast guide on parenting teens |
| 0:13.4 | and launching them into the world. I'm Cynthia Yanov, and as always, I'm joined by |
| 0:18.0 | psychologist and author Dr. Ken Wilgus. Here's a little fun fact for everybody is you and I batch tape. We batch tape these shows. We do a couple of the time. So if you happen to be listening to the last one, you're like, gosh, I hope she gets her mic fixed by next time they tape, we're literally taping back to back. So here we are with my same mic issue. Same mic. |
| 0:37.6 | But today on this show, we're going to talk about another frequent question you receive |
| 0:44.9 | is about the way that our kids dress, how they choose to dress. |
| 0:49.6 | And so I was thinking about this. |
| 0:51.3 | When I was in high school, it was totally the preppy stage. |
| 0:55.7 | Like we were wearing the like the shirts with like striped gap shirts, |
| 1:02.1 | the kind of buttoned down. |
| 1:03.2 | I mean, we had the girls who were where we'd wear white kids tennis shoes and put ribbon in them, |
| 1:07.7 | like literally by ribbon. |
| 1:09.4 | And like we were cute as I mean, cute, that's a relative term. But it wasn't, there wasn't like it was not in style for things when, I mean, I guess I probably had like, I don't know, maybe a mini skirt that went right above my knee, but like, it wasn't like, was this a Christian school or something? No, I was in public school, everybody. But no, we didn't, I don't know. I just don't remember that being a big issue. Or maybe that was just me. And that says a lot about my dorkiness. But I just don't remember it being a big issue on how I dress. Now, I do remember like maybe a round end of college or early law school. |
| 1:45.2 | The really short shorts like jean shorts came in. |
| 1:48.5 | But then I was kind of, you know, I was out of my parents' domain at that point. |
| 1:52.7 | But so I was just trying to think back as we're talking about just kind of trying to, as much as we can, |
| 1:57.9 | we want to regulate what our kids are wearing. |
| 1:59.8 | And the only thing I could think of |
| 2:00.9 | growing up is my mom wouldn't let me wear shorts to church on Sunday nights. That was the thing. |
| 2:06.3 | And boy, was irate about it. Were the things that you remember growing up, like regulating what |
| 2:10.7 | you were dressing? Like your parents were doing that? That's a great point. No, because I'm a guy. |
| 2:16.9 | Yeah. If you'll notice virtually, I think all the questions we get |
| 2:20.7 | about what kids can wear is usually a mother about a daughter. So there are some issues that come |
