John Dale Cavanus, known as Dale, was born to Peck and Norma Cavanus in 1925 in El Dorado, Illinois.

He was a star student athlete and was known to be very competitive.

In high school, he started dating a girl named Helen Pierce and her father was a doctor and seeing her father in his career is what sparked his interest to one day become a doctor.

After graduating high school, he joined the United States Navy and after two years of service in World War II, he was honorably discharged.

After leaving the Navy, Dale married Helen and began attending Southern Illinois University in Carvingdale, Illinois.

And I just had to laugh when I read that because I had a couple of friends who had friends from their hometown that attended S.I.U.

And I remember them going down and like having the best time there. So it seems like a fun place.

But he was studying medicine at S.I.U.

After graduating with his undergrad degree, Dale attended Washington University of Medicine in St. Louis, Louis, Louis. I think it's Louis.

Louis. It's, oh yeah, it's Louisville.

So he was attending Washington University of Medicine and he was a dedicated and successful student.
