Listeners, the philosopher Robert Nozik has a famous thought experiment called the

experience machine. The experience machine is capable of generating a perfectly realistic

virtual world and acting on your brain such that whilst you are inside, you believe that it

is real. You can stay in for as long as you like, even permanently, and the experience machine

has been programmed to give you a perfect life where you get everything that you ever want.

There's maybe just enough adversity to give context, but a life inside the experience machine

represents the happiest life that you could ever live.

And the question is, knowing that it's fake, would you choose to deceive yourself and plug in?

Do you care about happiness or do you care about other things like duty and truth?

You don't have to wonder what life inside the experience machine is like, though,
