Summary

This episode of the podcast is the first installment of a new 4-part series I’m calling Pillars of Performance. The main objective behind this series is to go deep with experts in the areas of training, strength and conditioning/injury prevention, sports psychology, and nutrition, i.e., the four pillars that support a foundation of sustainable performance no matter what event you’re training for or what level of runner you are.

My guest for this one is Mark Coogan, coach of Team New Balance Boston and co-author of the new book, Personal Best Running: Coach Coogan’s Strategies for the Mile to the Marathon. (You can learn more about Mark’s background as an athlete and coach on Episode 165 of the podcast.) In this conversation, Mark and I discuss his book, get into his training principles and the influences behind them, the importance of effort over exactitude, and a lot more.

This episode is brought to you by:

— Tracksmith. Tracksmith's new Spring Collection is now available, featuring a colorful refresh of some of my favorite training staples. I recently raced both an indoor mile and a road half marathon in the Allston Half Tights, which are my go-to for races and speed workouts. It's everything you could ever want in a half tight and then some! If you buy anything on Tracksmith.com, and you’re doing so for the first time, use the code MarioNEW to save $15 on your order of $75 or more. If you’re already a Tracksmith customer, use the code MarioGIVE and you can get free shipping on your next order and 5% of your purchase will go to support the Friendly House in Worcester, Massachusetts, an organization that is near and dear to me.

0:29.1

of years past. Chris, always great to sit down and chat with you. Yeah, I'm super stoked

0:33.8

for this, for this episode and for this series. So why don't you tell us a little bit about

0:37.9

what we're going to be listening to today. Yeah, you just, you just gave it away. This

0:41.2

episode is going to be the first in a four part series that I am calling the pillars of

0:47.3

performance. And for me, the four pillars of running performance are the training itself.

0:54.2

You got to put in the work in order to improve as a runner and the right kind of work.

0:59.6

Yes, yes, put in some work. That is a key component. But one of the pillars that kind of holds

1:05.1

this up. The second is going to be kind of a combo, strengthen conditioning, just basically

1:12.1

building a better athlete. And then what goes hand in hand with that is just the maintenance

1:18.2

and work required to handle all of this work that you're putting in. And for that episode,

1:24.4

we are going to have Ein Buie, Dr. Ein Buie, Dr. Physical Therapy and Certified Strength

1:29.7

and Conditioning Coach, who is going to help walk us through that. The third component

1:35.2

is the mental side of it, the mental training performance skills to help you get the best

1:41.2

out of yourself in training and racing. And for that conversation, we're going to sit

1:45.4

down, or I'm going to sit down with Dr. Justin Ross, who's a certified sports psychologist

1:50.1

out of Colorado. I'm pumped to have that conversation with him. He's someone I've corresponded

1:54.8

with over the years. So I'm really looking forward to sharing that one with everyone. And

2:00.1

then the last component is going to be nutrition, both from a day to day standpoint, recovery.

2:06.5

And then in some instances, during training and racing itself, and I don't have that guest
