Summary

After Briahna interviewed Dr. Vinay Prasad last month, some listeners -- along with tweeters from further afield -- recommended other COVID experts to offer a different view. This week, Briahna interviews one of those people: Dr. Justin Feldman, a social epidemiologist from Harvard's School of Public Health. She's also joined by Jamie Seltzer, Director of Scientific and Medical Research at #MeAction. I asked them about Prasad's central claim that advice around boosting requires more nuance as we learn more about the limitations of vaccines, how long COVID factors into policy planning, and what it even means these days to "trust science" now that the CDC has gotten so much wrong.

But I think what folks want to hear is what it looks like to have a solution that actually

0:05.8

accommodates the extreme volumes of loss that we're still experiencing, which you were

0:10.7

very right to point out.

0:12.4

The human cost of this pandemic, which is still enormous, not to mention the largely

community in particular.

And the traffic jam, the log jam that I've observed in these kinds of conversations is

0:29.9

that while there's a lot of consensus on how we don't want to be indifferent to marginalized

0:35.5

groups in particular, as leftists, when people say that the solution is something like continued

0:41.4

lockdowns, whatever that means, let's say school closures, no in nor dining, things like

0:47.0

this, that even folks who would kind of agree with the moral toll here seem to think for

0:54.2

political reasons, or because of the real cost to individuals not having their kids get

1:00.6

an education, not being able to open their businesses back up and continue to earn a salary

1:04.7

in a world where they are not in fact getting much in the way of support from the government

1:08.0

anymore.

1:09.0

It's just not something that they want to bear.

1:11.8

And they feel like it is, in fact, quote unquote, elites who are telling them that they

1:15.2

have to take the financial hit for policies that are going to hurt them the most.

1:19.4

What do you say to those kinds of people?

1:21.3

Well, the idea that indoor dining is the pinnacle of human existence is a little bit, that's

1:27.0

a little bit laughable.

1:28.6

I've held back on a laugh.
