Summary

What goes into being a world cup mechanic? Is it all glitz and glamour or is it more about processes, planning, and cleaning shoes? Henry talks to two mechanics who are at slightly different stages of their journey. John has been Aaron Gwin's mechanic for a decade and has seen it all from the very top. He shares some stories about supporting one of modern downhill's defining athletes. Jim Bland just finished his second season working for the slightly smaller Union team. While not a factory outfit, the Santa Cruz-supported team that's backed by Steel City Media has a track record of punching above its weight, as well as guiding youngsters onto the next stage of their careers.

1:04.4

So the union's kind of, it's quite special really because we're a non-profit team.

1:08.5

Actually registers as a charity with the, I guess the main goal of the team is to

1:13.1

get talent, capitalize on it, and then hopefully kind of like get the riders onto bigger

1:17.7

factory programs and yeah, kind of use their talent and get them what they deserve kind of thing.

1:23.3

So yeah, we're very open and yeah, the whole focus is on building potential, maximising young talent, and hopefully, yeah, given in the future everyone deserves.

1:33.1

And, I mean, I think it's going to be really interesting to talk, so you can probably say a car rattle past, because this will be your second season wrenching.

1:41.5

And it feels like this season is kind of things are, you're going to, let's face it,

1:45.5

I've had some great results.

1:46.2

I've been particularly stoked to see Olly Davis.

1:48.2

Really, because he's a fantastically talented rider.

1:50.1

I think he's the hardest property on the circuit of the minute.

1:54.2

Unlucky with some injuries, but he really let it all talk on the track, eh?

1:58.7

Oh, for sure. Like, no one, I think it was impossible to forecast what he's done this year.

2:03.3

Like, obviously he had some injuries and niggles last year, but yeah, he was almost, like,
