2007. I recently heard this story about Sherlock Holmes and it comes from the book of

The Adventure of Silver Blaze. Now, Holmes is solving a case of this missing racehorse and a murdered trainer.

And he ended up figuring it out.

And the way he figured it out is because he learned that there was a dog that didn't bark.

Now that dog was the watchdog and it would have barked at a stranger but that night it didn't make a peep which

told holmes Sherlock Holmes that the intruder wasn't a stranger it was probably someone that the dog knew

and that small detail of what didn't happen actually helped Sherlock Holmes unravel the

entire mystery and it got me thinking that leadership and coaching and parenting and being the boss

or leading a group of people is a lot like solving a mystery it's not about just about what you

see and hear it's often about what's missing what's not just about what you see and hear. It's often about what's missing, what's not happening.

With your team, the silence in a meeting might signal discomfort. The lack of a question might mean someone's confused or they're afraid to ask.

A player who's unusually quiet might mean that they're battling something

personal that they don't want anyone to know about. In that story about Sherlock Holmes, he digs deeper.

He finds that missing horse, Silver Blaze. It wasn't stolen, but it had defended itself from the trainer who is secretly

trying to sabotage it.

The dog silence was a clue that unlocked the entire case.

As leaders were often surrounded by noise, games, stats, opinions, media, all the noise, external and internal.

But the true insights, a lot of times true insight, comes in the quiet moments.

And my invitation is to pay attention to the dog that didn't bark.

Notice that player who isn't speaking up, the assistant coach who seems hesitant
