Good morning and welcome to the Increase Your Impact Podcast. I'm Justin Sua, episode

2053. I was recently talking to an athlete and this athlete wanted to increase his leadership

ability to be seen as more of a leader on the team. And the question I asked him was,

if I were to tape your mouth shut and have you go out and perform,

what would you do in order to gain the trust that you can be a leader with following on your team?

And he said exactly what I had anticipated him to say.

He said, I would do my job to the best of my ability.

And I asked him, what would you mean by that?

He said, I would know my role and I would just do it.

Do it to the best of my ability to the point to where when I was eventually able to speak, it would have some weight behind

it because I'm a person who the team sees that I do what I say I'm going to do.

And then we had this great conversation around trust.

When your team trusts you, when they see you practicing hard, when they see you studying film, when they see you doing your

job to the best of your ability, then you will have the capacity to say what you need to say

in order to lead the team because your team knows that you're not just about words,

you're about actions. And then what he did, he designed a little

routine, his call his do your job meter. And at the end of the day, he started to document on the

scale of 1 to 10 how well he's doing his job, according to him. And then it's, he's identifying,

he's seeing if he notices the byproduct being that his team

will see him as a leader, not even see him as a leader, but that he'll feel have more confidence

to speak up because he knows he's doing everything that he can to pay the price to be great,

knowing that as he does that day in and day out during practice, during games, that he would be somebody worth listening to.
