Summary

After the online debate a couple of weeks ago between friend of the show Olayemi Olurin & Brie's rising co-hosts Kim Iversen & Robby Soave, Briahna wondered if it were possible to have a different kind of conversation if 1) it were longer form, and 2) it included a Trans leftist. This episode is the result of that experiment. Kim Iversen joins union organizer Esperanza to discuss the viral Rising segment and whether there is such a thing as a legitimate speech concern when the already vulnerable trans community stands to bear the brunt of the consequences. They also discussed the viral colloquy between Berkeley Professor Khiara Bridges & Senator Josh Hawley last week. Should the left be concerned about the "comms" effects of these viral moments and workshop responses designed to make the fight for LGBTQ equality more accessible? Or is it not worth trying to win arguments with bad faith actors like Hawley?

Honeymeen Kim, I think that when activism reaches a certain point, it starts to aggravate people

0:36.7

that would normally be your ally. They become aggravated. The conversation spirals out of control.

I think we see that people are trying to protect certain groups of people. And they say we want to

0:46.5

make sure this group of people have these rights and we're fighting for the rights. But the pendulum

0:51.7

swings too far and it ends up creating a resentment in the rest of the population when somebody who

0:58.3

thinks they're on your side like myself, for example, I have never once advocated against any rights

1:04.1

for trans folks. In fact, I've been one that says, I don't really care what bathroom anybody

1:09.2

uses. Use the one you're comfortable using. I don't know why we have to make laws against this.

1:13.6

I'm somebody that's been vocal about that publicly yet still get labeled a transphobe or any other.

1:19.6

And that's not just transits any issue. We call the race history or any kind of bigoted name.

1:24.9

And it's because if you speak up and say anything, then suddenly those that are the activist class,

1:30.4

they will come after you. And if you have any disagreement, they label it hate speech.

1:35.6

They then say, you're a bigot. And then they come after. They come after people.

1:40.1

So when you come after people like that over and over and say, no, you're not allowed to say this

1:43.7

because this is now my definition of hate speech or this is my definition of being a bigot.

1:47.9

And that's what you are now. That's what you're engaging in. It causes resentment in this other
