In our last episode I told you that there are thousands of abandoned cities, towns, homes, factories, hospitals, military. of one a fading picture of what once was. I also told you the story of the German

hospital Belitz Helstatin which was used by the Russian Soviet Union from

the years following the Second World War until the Soviet Union

crumbled in the early 1990s. In this episode we're going to travel back in time just a few years before that to the year

1986. I remember this time period very clearly because

that was the year that I was 12 years old. During this time in history

Russia or the Soviet Union, was controlled by a communist government.

The United States and the Soviet Union were engaged in a hostile international disagreement, commonly called the Cold War.

The Soviet Union controlled a number of smaller countries, and one of these countries is Ukraine.

This is where we will go today to explore something extremely interesting

and rather spooky.

Near the northern border of Ukraine is the city of Pripyat. This city was

established in early 1970 with the sole purpose of housing the families of the

employees of the Chernobyl nuclear station, which is situated less than two miles away from the city.

A nuclear station is a power station that uses heat from a nuclear reactor to generate steam to drive a turbine that is connected to a generator which in turns produces electricity.

I know this is rather complicated and if you are not quite sure what I mean by this, pause this episode

for just a moment and ask someone to help you find some information about it.
