I have a long-awaited interview, and I want to thank Andrew Hamilton for helping set this up.

Today I'm interviewing Virginia Kearns on the history of Sally Knoche, and I'm really excited

to talk about her because Sally Kinnash is a woman that is sort of laced with mystery,

folklore, and a lot of misinformation. Virginia Kern spent years studying the source material on

Sally and found out a lot more that dispels the myth of who Sally was. I've been wanting

to talk about Sally on this podcast for a long time. She was allegedly one of the Native American

plural wives of Brigham Young. At least that's how the story goes. I've heard her called a slave.

I've heard her called a servant. I've heard her called a plural wife of Brigham Young. And no one actually really knows who she was or what relationship she

had with the young family. The typical story is that she's a Bannock woman and when she's seven

years old, she's kidnapped from her tribe and sold by Ute slavers to the Mormons.

And then, of course, she's either a servant or a plural wife or a slave to the Brigham Young family.

And later on, Brigham gives her to Chief Kanish, where she's married as a plural wife to this Ute chief, and she is killed in a fit of jealousy

by a jealous plural wife. At least that's the story. Virginia Carnes breaks up and dispels a bunch of

those myths, including the age of Sally, including her indigenous name, which has often been

misattributed, including her tribe, her tribal
