Summary

You may have seen our "Getting to Know" series of interviews, where we talk with the great and good of racing and mountain biking to understand to them better or maybe just familiarise ourselves with their career. We thought we'd bring that to a long-form interview format with some Pinkbike staff and contributors. I'll try and squeeze them in over the summer as and when time allows. Is there anyone you're desperate to hear from? Let me know in the comments section.

Hello and welcome to the Pink Bike Podcast. My name is Henry Quine and today I'm joined by

0:16.4

Mike Kazima. Now, I thought we'd do this kind of lighthearted fun series called Getting to

0:22.6

Know. Now, if you're on the website regularly, you will know that we've run this set of

0:25.7

interviews before in the written form for races and people in the industry. However, I thought

0:30.7

it's about time we got to know some of the Pink Bike staff and also it would give people an

0:34.8

opportunity to appear on a podcast where I promise to shut up for

0:38.1

at least five seconds. Mike Hazema. So start off by telling people what you do at Pinkbike.

0:45.5

Okay. Well, I am the managing tech editor. So basically I review and write about bikes and products

0:50.9

and all that. And I also make sure that other people review and write about products and get their work done. Yeah, I was going to say, is it, you know, self-affessment

1:00.7

on it feels a bit like a parent's evening. Are we, are we okay to manage or are you sometimes pulling

1:04.9

out your hair? No, you're all good to manage. Yeah, it's not bad. I mean, everyone that works for Pinkbike or most of everyone that I deal with

1:10.9

loves bikes and I think that makes it easier. So it's not like a like everyone wants to be here

1:15.4

most of the time. So I think that makes it easier than if you're in some kind of like, you know,

1:19.8

gnarly corporate cubicle world where no one really wanted to be there. That'd be a lot harder.

1:23.5

So I think yeah. Yes, true. People are genuinely passionate about bikes. And so that kind of makes this

1:27.8

job a lot easier as far as managing goes. And did you always know you were going to work in bikes?

1:33.3

Did you have a, was bikes the backup plan? Or was something else the backup plan if bikes didn't come

1:37.9

through? No, yeah, bikes were kind of always the plan. Like ever since I started I mean I started riding on like 12 years old and was fully addicted

1:44.3

from that moment on and then um yeah bikes was a plan I wasn't sure what regard I would end up in

1:49.5

like I worked in shops and I'm sure I'll get into all that but um yeah bikes or some sort of outdoor

1:53.7

industry job is always always a plan ever since I was a little kid and important question

2:00.4

when I ask everyone this question why didn't you make it as a pro?
