Summary

In Britain in the early 18th century private social clubs were all the rage. These societies grew out of the emerging coffeehouse culture and soon became an integral part of the social life of the British upper crust. The most notorious of all these groups was the so-called Hell-Fire Club. In 1721 a near panic was fueled by the English press, who reported that this club hosted orgies, encouraged blasphemy, and held rude pantomimes of sacred religious rituals. Even King George I himself became concerned that these clubs were corrupting British society. But how much of this was real and how much was invented by the imaginative British press? Tune-in and find out how the Farting Club, Giant Drunkasadog , and someone called Lady Polygamy all play a role in the story. The author of Gargantua's history explains to his reader that, quote, the people of Paris

are so sottish, so foolish and fond by nature, that a juggler, a mule with symbols or tinkling

bells, or a blind fiddler in the middle of a cross-lane, shall draw a greater confluence

of people together than an evangelical preacher.

End quote.

1:03.1

Apparently, in those days, the people of Paris thought even a mule with symbols made

for a good show.

1:10.4

So an honest to goodness giant caused an absolute sensation.

1:16.6

As soon as Gargantua arrived in the city, he was mobbed by a crowd of curious parisians,

1:22.2

amazed by his every move.

1:24.8

The giant found this amusing.

1:26.6

I'll be it a little annoying, as the crush of onlookers started to make it hard for

him to move about freely.

1:34.5

So to free himself, he trumped over to Notre Dame Cathedral and found a comfortable place
