Briahna speaks to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald about the relationship between billionaires and the media. Will Elon Musk buying Twitter benefit the platform, or are free speech advocates overly optimistic about the valence of his prospective influence? How did Glenn safeguard editorial independence as he co-founded The Intercept with eBay billionaire Pierre Omidyar's funding, and what happened when that independence lapsed? What does Glenn make of the recent Vanity Fair piece alleging that Peter Thiel is attempting to fund the "post left," and does one need to be consciously "bought off" to advance the interests of tech billionaires? Are the incentives set by the algorithm enough to lead even the best intentioned person astray? Also, we discuss the recent controversy over Washington Post journalist Taylor Lorenz's viral article about Libs of TikTok. What does Glenn make of arguments that he's the one who doxxed the account owner, not Taylor? And what does he make of accusations that he is unfairly targeting Taylor for criticism?

Let's just be clear about one thing. First of all, is that there's a lot of billionaire funding

0:05.5

and not just liberal, but left wing spaces as well. Some of your favorite left wing NGOs

0:11.5

are fueled by money from George Soros, Pierre at Midiar, other kinds of left-leaning billionaires.

There's a lot of campaigns, political campaigns, not just politicians, but referenda and the like

0:26.0

criminal justice reform, legalizing marijuana, equality for LGBTs that are also heavily financed

0:32.9

with billionaire funding. Michael Bloomberg gives enormous sums of money to gun control and

0:37.6

gun reform groups. So there's a huge amount of billionaire funding coming into not just liberal

0:44.4

but left wing spaces on the grounds that, well, look, we wish we lived in a world with

0:48.3

reading after rely on billionaire funding, but that's not the world in which we actually live.

0:52.6

The other issue I would say is you're right that there was excitement about the prospect

0:57.3

that Elon Musk might take over Twitter under the banner of free speech. There was also a huge

1:03.0

amount of panic and anger and indignation that mostly came from the corporate press that relies

1:10.3

upon this censorship regime in all sorts of ways. And I think when you look at how much anger

1:17.0

emanated from places like the Washington Post and the New York Times and CNN and NBC news and

1:23.2

all other kinds of power centers, including the US security state over the prospect that Elon Musk

1:28.3

might come in and take out of their hands are really important weapon, which is the weapon to

1:32.2

silence dissent, not just dissent on the right, but also as you said, people on the left are

1:37.9

constantly getting harassed and silenced and demonetized and even banned on YouTube, which is why

1:43.5

when I went to rumble, one of the first people eager to come with me and who actually went was

1:47.6

Matt Orfella, who became known as a videographer for the Sanders campaign in 2016. There's a lot of

1:53.6

this dissent that's growing rapidly. And so nobody's under an illusion about who Elon Musk is.

2:00.3

I think the idea is that right now there's such hegemonic control over big tech social media platforms
