Probably the most prominent figure in the story of New England during the 1680s was Governor

Edmund Andrews.

He was appointed to serve as the first Governor of New York upon England's acquisition of the territory from the Dutch.

It's a bit surprising, to me at least, that he was appointed by the Duke of York James Stewart.

Governor Andros was a staunch Anglican, while York, this was an excellent compromise.

New England was still very Puritan.

We're creeping up on the Salem witch trials here.

Appointing someone who shared James' beliefs would have resulted in, well probably in a dead governor

floating in the harbor.

On the other hand an avid Anglican could curb some of the more radical Puritan ideas

in the colonies.

Andros, who was doing a good job in James eyes,

was given full gubernatorial control of the Northern

and Middle colonies, and it was called the Dominion of New England.

The colony of New York, which at the time included New Jersey and parts of Delaware, was
