making a show feel grand and unforgettable. Perhaps the most famous circus showman, P.T. Barnum,

co-founded Barnum and Bailey's greatest show on earth, and his marketing schemes popularized the

Long before the greatest show on earth,

the American circus began in Philadelphia in 1793,

created by a trick-writing juggler from England,

John Bill Ricketts, the circus showcased writing acts, clown performances,

and tight-rope walking.

But everything came crashing down for Rickett's circus in 1799.
