Friends, the time has come for us to speak of the giants.

You know what I'm talking about?

Huge lumbering gigantic humanoids.

Top of the beanstalk beyond the wall through the wardrobe into Narnia giants.

This may be one of the most common mythological creatures found across the world.

The Greek poet Hisiad wrote that the giants were the earliest sons of the earth, who went

to war with the gods of Olympus in a clash known as the Gigantomaki.

And yeah, Gigantomaki, great man name.

Giants play an even more prominent role in Norse mythology.

The colossal beings often struggled with gods like Odin and Thor.

Giants play a key role in the Norse creation story and the fabled end time known as Ragnarok.

There are Japanese giants like the monstrous De Daribuchi, who is said to have carried

mountains across the Japanese island chain.

In Hindu mythology, the main antagonist in the epic known as the Ramayana is a ten headed

giant king of Lanka named Ravana.

The Old Testament makes a number of references to entire tribes of giants.

The most famous biblical giant is of course the towering Goliath, who was slain by the

diminutive King David.

The indigenous Wendat people from my home province of Ontario had a story of a great giant

named Kichikawana, who shaped the geography of Georgian Bay with his mighty hands and

eventually laid down to die on an island still called Giants Tomb.

I'm always fascinated by archetypes like this that appear across cultures.
