So in this episode, we're going to talk about the greenhouse effect and how it acts to warm up the Earth's climate relative to what it otherwise would be.

So we'll start with talking about the Earth's energy budget and then introduce the idea of the greenhouse effect and the impact of greenhouse gases have on our atmosphere.

We'll talk about the different types of greenhouse gases and their roles in trapping different types of wavelengths of radiation that's submitted from the Earth's surface.

We'll talk about the idealized greenhouse

model, which is a simple mathematical approach to understand the dynamics a little bit better.

We'll then talk about some more of the advanced concepts like radiative transfer models

and the sensitivity of the Earth to changes in radiative forcing due to increases in greenhouse gases.

So without further ado, let's get started and introduce the idea of Earth's energy budget.

This refers to the different flows of energy to the Earth from the Sun and from the Earth out

to space again.

So Earth receives energy from the Sun, obviously.

The Sun emits radiation mostly in the visible spectrum.

It has a surface temperature of about 6,000 Kelvin, and by laws of

black body radiation, that means that a body at that temperature will emit mostly in the visible
