Summary

Another few days with varying fortunes. The week started disastrously with the loss of a vital piece of equipment. The views continued to make the heart fly and the Smoky Mountain got closer and closer.

Along the way, the humanity of hikers was on full display, especially one night in a very full shelter (Picture thanks to Ashley "Boomer" Enders). These are the evenings to relish and the ones that will stick in my mind long after the hike is over.

Now, after my longest day, I'm set to tackle the Smokies from Sunday and hope to report back after I reach Newfound Gap. Bring 'em on.

And I'm not doing this deliberately, but this last three days, and I think I left you at the Nantahela outdoor center,

0:50.9

has been started with an absolute disaster and finished absolutely great um it's been a

0:57.6

complete it feels like a complete week since i last spoke to you but um i think it's been a learning

1:06.0

experience for me one that i needed probably to remind me of the importance of making sure I look after

1:15.0

my gear. But let's go back to that first morning when the disaster happened within the

1:20.4

first mile. And this is day number 17. Day 17, Nantahela Outdoor Centre, mile 136.7 to Sassafras Gap Shelter, mile 143.8.

I got up in the morning at the Nantaylor Outdoor Centre. Actually, I was at the log cabins up the road,

1:42.8

that's right. And I needed some new gear

1:45.4

and I wanted to buy a new fleece and things like that and some gas and a few food items. And I assume

1:52.0

because because hikers are around, people are hiking in and out of that area the whole time,

1:57.3

that most of the shops would be open at a reasonable time. Well, the restaurant wasn't open for

2:00.9

breakfast, although there was another place we could get breakfast, which was a kind of store.

2:06.8

But the outdoor centre itself didn't open until 10 o'clock, so I had to basically kick my

2:12.7

hills for a while while I waited for it to open. I was kind of dreading the climb uphill.

2:20.3

I remember that hike out of the NOC pretty well.

2:24.3

After the fierceness of the downhill, the day before,

2:27.3

getting out of the place is just as fierce on the way up.

2:30.3

So my day was delayed.
