Summary

Dawn Barton’s demeanor and her story don’t seem to match at a glimpse. She radiates hope, optimism, and cheerfulness. You’d be forgiven for thinking she’s had an easy life, but that’s far from the truth. Dawn has walked through an amount of darkness that most of us couldn’t imagine. Through trial after trial, she’s learned to choose joy when despair would be a much more natural option. Dawn sits down with Davey to share some of the pain she’s walked through and how she found God in the midst of it all.   Episode Resources: Visit Dawn’s Website Follow Dawn on Instagram and Facebook Buy Dawn’s Book - Laughing Through the Ugly Cry   Other Resources: Visit My Pain to Purpose Plan for Churches Check out our Nothing is Wasted Community Groups This podcast is sponsored by Faithful Counseling Learn more about your ad choices. Today's conversation is with Don Barton, who might be hands down the most positive, optimistic person you've ever met.

0:37.0

Yes, she is definitely a half-glassful kind of woman, very encouraging.

0:41.0

And I love when people are half-glassful types of people. That's kind of my bent as well.

0:46.0

And there's certain personalities, I feel like, you know, Aubrey, we've talked about this a little bit before,

0:52.0

but certain personalities that seem to be more well-equipped to walk through pain because they're optimistic or maybe they kind of have that like strong mentality.

1:05.0

Yeah. And I just wonder, with optimism and faith and the convergence of those things, what are your thoughts, how much does optimism play into our ability to walk through and navigate pain well?

1:22.0

I feel like that's a really good question.

1:25.0

I wonder if it's not optimism, because optimism can sometimes come across as cliche or like...

1:37.0

Yeah, yeah, so it's not quite optimism. It's hope, right? It's hope in Christ.

1:45.0

And kind of having the long-term view that no matter what we face, no matter what toil and snare or walking through,

1:55.0

no matter what valley of the shadow of death, we're walking through that God is with us, that we fight our battles from victory not defeat.

2:06.0

That's great.

2:07.0

That we fight what we're up against from the resurrection, not from destruction.

2:13.0

And so I think there is something really biblical about, I mean, you know I'm passionate about lamenting and crying out in grief.

2:21.0

Absolutely.

2:22.0

That's what my second book is about.

2:24.0

But in every lament, there's that word yet or that word, but, right?
