The Japan Air Lines flight, piloted by Captain Kenju Terauchi, was transporting a cargo of wine to Narita International Airport. The flight was long, and the Boeing had to make a refueling stop in Reykjavik, Iceland before continuing on to another refueling stop in Anchorage, Alaska. The aircraft was occupied by only 3 people on this journey: the captain, the co-pilot, and the flight engineer.
