“Chaz is a strong woman, sure of herself. I'd never met anyone like her,” wrote her late husband, Roger Ebert. Truth be told: neither have I. Chaz Ebert is a singular soul. Wise, kind, and extremely busy. She's the CEO of Ebert companies, including RogerEbert.com. She's a publisher of books, a philanthropist, and a TV and film producer. I've known Chaz for seven years, and this week we finally sat down to talk– about her upbringing on the West Side of Chicago, her marriage with Roger, the time spent grieving in his absence, and how she plans continue creating her legacy. 0:00.0 | Pushkin There's this really weird idiosyncratic thing that happens with me. I've written my entire life. I say that I was born a writer. It doesn't mean that I'm good, it just means that I find it writing a very natural thing to do. |
0:32.0 | But I always wrote for myself. I didn't write for other |

0:39.0 | school paper and I've written probably novels that have not been published because I don't want people to read what I write if it reveals anything about me. |
0:49.0 | That was Chaz Ebert. I'm Sanvergoso and this is Talk Easy. |
0:54.3 | Welcome to the show. Oh, Hey everyone. I have known Chaz Ebert for six, seven years now and we have done only one interview in the past. |
1:30.0 | It was right after Life itself, the film about Roger Ebert, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. |
1:37.0 | You could find that interview on Roger Ebert.com. |
1:40.0 | It was a short talk, and since we started this show I knew that she was going to have to come on at some point |
1:50.6 | And if you've been listening the entire time since we started in April of 2016, you may remember |
1:57.8 | that I quote Roger Ebert on empathy in that first episode. |
2:03.0 | It is a guiding principle of this show. |
2:06.0 | So having her on here today is kind of bringing this thing full circle. |
2:11.0 | That's not to say the show is done after this episode, but Chaz is really |
2:16.2 | unlike any person I know. She is exceedingly generous. She is kind. She looks after you, even when you think you don't need to be looked after. |
2:26.6 | I've never encountered another soul like her, and if I can make a bed on it, which I would never do, but if I could make a bet on it which I would never do but if I could make a bet on it I |
2:35.4 | bet that I will never meet someone like her in this lifetime again. |
2:41.0 | And yet despite the fact that we do know each other pretty well, this was an incredibly |
2:48.0 | nerve-wracking experience in the beginning for both of us. |
2:52.0 | Chaz does not love talking about herself and she is someone |
2:57.8 | who like me is much more comfortable asking questions and fact, at one point in this interview, |
3:05.2 | I kind of grant her a small 10 minute window |
