Last time we talked about the Elizabethan gentleman adventurers.

Names like Richard Hawkins, William Hawkins, Walter Raleigh, George Clifford, the Earl of Cumberland,

and James Lancaster.

All of them were privateers and to one degree or another, contemporaries of Francis Drake.

We talked about their roles in the 1588 battle against the Spanish armada and the voyage that was organized by Lord Clifford to raid Spanish and Portuguese shipping in the Atlantic.

When we left off, they had just received word of an incoming flotilla of large Portuguese

treasure carrocks headed for Flores Island.

That included the largest ship in the Portuguese Navy, very possibly the largest ship in the world,

Madre de Dius.

Let's join them now in the Northern Azores at the beginning of August 1592.

That Portuguese Flotilla was still a week or two away at best. The English chose to go ashore there at Flores and see if they had anything to trade. They landed around a hundred men and found the people of the town barricaded inside the church with their few guns pointed at their enemies, the English.
