The second coming by W.B. Yates is among the most

influential and well-known poems of the 20th century. It's one of my personal

favorites and I don't think I'm alone in that.

If you're familiar with the poem, you'll see allusions pop up in literature and music all over the place.

It was written a hundred years ago in 1919 in the wake of World War I.

That war held horrors enough to inspire a poem about the end of the world,

but the war was only part of the story.

There was the global flu pandemic that held the world in its grip.

There was civil war in Russia and Yugoslavia and Estonia.
