discussed everything pertinent to the story of pirates and piracy in the

history of the world from about 1453 to roughly 1650.

And there haven't really been any pirates in that story so far.

There have been privateers like Francis Drake, but mostly we've talked about exploration and colonization, about religion and war and politics.

I consider these things, and at least a rough understanding of them key to understanding the pirates of the Golden Age of piracy.
