Good morning and welcome to the Increasing Impact Podcast. I'm Justin Sua, episode 1,860.

0:07.5

I was listening to an interview by Michael Phelps that was done years ago and he explained the

0:13.9

importance and the power of visualization for him. He says this, quote, I spend a ton of time visualizing on how the race could go,

0:24.0

how I want the race to go, and how I don't want the race to go. So I'm already prepared for whatever

0:30.3

happens. I can accept it and move past it, close quote. The reason I really like that is because

0:37.0

there are some people out there who do not

0:40.8

want to visualize the bad because they think that they put it out there to the universe and they say,

0:47.0

hey, I don't even want to put my mind there and give my mind the thought to go there.

0:50.7

Now, the problem with that is, I see their point, but the problem with that is, is that

0:54.4

good things that are happening, then when adversity strikes, when that person begins to struggle, when that person begins to run

1:14.0

into some things that they had not anticipated, nor did they want to anticipate, all of a sudden

1:19.3

they're going to respond to it with panic. However, if they're like Michael Phelps, they've already visualized that.

1:29.8

And not only have they visualized how they don't want the things to have their performance

1:34.1

to go, they've also visualized how they want to respond to it.

1:38.6

So my invitation to you today, for those of you who are writing in your journals,

1:42.5

is to think about something coming up that's important to you, a for those of you who are writing in your journals, is to think about something

1:44.5

coming up that's important to you, a performance of some kind. And if you're a coach, this might

1:49.8

be a good exercise to do with your students or a leader or whatnot, and ask yours, and write it

1:55.1

down. How do you want it to go? How do you not want it to go? And how could it go? Being able to put down all of the

2:04.0

potential outcomes will help you look at it clearly, help you prepare for adversity, and also keep
