| 0:00.0 | Good morning. Welcome to the increased impact podcast. I'm Justin Sua episode 1,796. I heard a phrase today that that has been on my mind all day. The phrase goes be a learn it all, not a know it all. |
| 0:16.0 | Be a learn it all, not a know it all. Now obviously you can't learn everything there is to know about everything, but the basic concept is highlighting the importance of curiosity. |
| 0:29.0 | Learning more, understanding people and if you want to learn you need to get better at asking questions instead of going around telling people what the answer is or what you think, ask people what they think, ask people what their opinion is, ask as many questions as you possibly can. |
| 0:48.0 | Because a know it all is someone who has a lot of blind spots because we can't possibly know it all. It's someone who's trying to status signal their knowledge. It's someone who's trying to establish a position of power. It's someone and sometimes it comes from a good place. |
| 1:06.0 | Sometimes the intentions are they're well-intended people trying to show how much they know. Now what we all often discount is the environment. Sometimes the environment that you work in, the environment you play in, the environment at home makes you more susceptible to skewing towards the learn it all or the know it all. Maybe you're an environment where it pays to be smart. |
| 1:33.0 | And you have to show how smart you are. You have to debate and you have to show your authority and your confidence with what you know. However, there are other environments where it's important to say I don't know and to display intellectual humility. |
| 1:51.0 | And when people have that mindset, sincerely trying to learn it all, that's when you begin to learn more and more and more. And then you become such a tremendous asset to people who you're with because you've collected so much information from so many different people and then you can start making these connections and these linkages. |
| 2:12.0 | And you can start applying things you learn in one domain and apply it to another domain. Things you learn in one with one problem and apply it to solve another problem. You can become more innovative, more creative and a better decision maker. |
| 2:27.0 | So today, my invitation to you is to consider that question or to consider being a learn it all as opposed to a know it all. Have a great day and we'll do it again tomorrow. |
