SUA episode 1,782. Today we're talking about a simple strategy that you can

do right here, right now, to help you navigate in the obstacle you might be

currently facing. I was working with an athlete and she was telling me about a

situation that was creating some stress. And this situation is something that

she has no control over. However, the story that she's telling herself is

something that derailed her focus. Her focus. It caused her to not focus on the

main thing. We often talk about Covey's quote, the main thing is to keep the

main thing the main thing. And she goes on to say that this uncontrollable

event, whenever it happened during competition, it would pull her from the

main thing. And as she began to tell me the story that she tells herself about

this situation. Every time it bubbles up, she told me how it affects her thoughts.

She told me how it affects her feelings, how it affects her tension, and how

ultimately it affects her game. And when she was done telling me that question, I

asked her, what is an alternative story you can tell yourself? And she paused

and she says, what do you mean? I said, well, if you could choose your story. What

story would you tell yourself? And as she began to consider an alternative story,

she began to talk about how she would like herself to view it, how she would

like to respond. And I asked her, what would have to be true for you to respond

differently? And she tells this story, this empowering story that turns the volume

down on the stress. And when she was done sharing how she would like to tell

herself that story, her eyes were open. And she realized that she could tell
