Last week we talked about several voyages of Francis Drake, voyages that included raids on Spanish

shipping, attacks on Spanish towns, and finally an attack on the Spanish

treasure fleet as it crossed overland on the backs of a mule train.

These events were known collectively as Drake's war,

and they proved very successful for him.

However, when he returned to England,

he found that he wasn't the national hero

he thought he would be.

London was very tense at the time because of the international political situation as well as

some of the internal politics of Elizabeth's court.

So Drake decided to take a step back from all that after his report to Elizabeth and take some time for himself.

He bought a house and he spent some time with his wife.

He took care of some business affairs as well.
