This week we're going to be talking about Christopher Columbus and the Spanish colonization

of the New World.

I intended to talk about this topic last time, however, as sometimes happens with me, I got

distracted on some historical tangents that I found pretty interesting.

So I told myself that this week I was going to stay on target. I was going to talk about Christopher Columbus and not let myself get distracted. So, naturally, I'm about to talk to you about the Mongol Empire.

The Mongol Empire, at its height during the Middle Ages, spanned most of Asia, the majority

of what's now called the Middle East, and even in parts of Russia and Europe.

It was a huge amount of territory. The Mongolian Empire was massive. Now after the

initial conquest, some internal strife, civil wars, and dynastic struggles, the Mongol Empire reached a period of relative peace and

stability.

There was a saying about this period in time, a period in time known to historians as the Pax Mongolica, a maiden. A

known to historians as the Pax Mongolica, a maiden bearing a nugget of gold on her head could wander safely through the realm.

Now even if that's propaganda, that kind of goes to show you that at the time it must have been a peaceful
