Dr. Flowers plays a recent teaching released by Dr. John Piper on Ephesians 1:11-14 in order to demonstrate the error of the Calvinistic interpretation. Eph. 1:11 is one of the most used proof texts to support the Calvinistic doctrine of theistic determinism, the concept that God has sovereignly and unchangeably decreed whatsoever comes to pass, including every sinful inclination and action.

0:18.4 | In a recent episode, he just released there at his website Desiring God, |
0:23.1 | where he talks about Ephesians Chapter 1. Now, we've gone through Ephesian Chapter 1 before on many other programs, |
0:29.1 | as you well know, but here he specifically is starting with verse 11 and gives us a real clear indication, |
0:35.4 | I think, of the fault line of the Calvinistic worldview |
0:37.8 | when it comes to interpretation of this text from the Calvinistic vantage point, really |
0:45.7 | supporting what is known as theistic determinism, the idea that God has sovereignly and |
0:50.4 | unchangeably ordained whatsoever comes to pass, including men's intentions, evil intentions, desires, choices, absolutely everything is within this divine decree, which was apparently took place before all of creation, supposedly. |
1:08.4 | Now, usually when we ask the question, where in the Bible does it teach |
1:12.3 | of this sovereign divine decree, i.e. Theistic determinism. Ephesians chapter 1, verse 11, is the first |
1:20.1 | text that's typically mentioned by a Calvinist. It's usually one of the ones that's listed in their |
1:25.3 | proof text, in their statements of faith and that's |
1:28.2 | what we want to try to go through today and looking at this text in its proper |
1:32.6 | context so first we're going to play from dr. Piper and let you hear his |
1:37.6 | exposition at least a portion of it and we'll stop and engage with some of that |
1:42.5 | we are also going to to look at some articles, one article, |
1:47.4 | and specific by John MacArthur, which in my estimation seems to counteract or really stand in |
1:53.6 | opposition to some of the findings that we see from Calvinist typically. As we have noticed |
1:59.4 | before, sometimes Calvinists are not always as consistent within their theological framework as they could be when talking about certain passages and certain texts. |
2:10.0 | Ephesians 111, I think, is a perfect parallel to what we see in Romans 828 when it speaks of God working out all things together for good for those who love |
2:21.1 | him and are called according to his purpose. I think basically the same principle, the same truth |
