A 15-year-old boy has been remanded in custody after appearing in courts charged with the murder of Jodie Jones.

At around 7.30, the police arrested the youth at his home and brought him back here to the station.

A crowd gathers outside the High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh, Scotland.

It's pandemonium. Press, public, there's a sea of people. Luke Mitchell wears a suit, it's black and he has a blue shirt on underneath. His long brown hair is swept back into a ponytail and he looks down at the floor as he enters the building. His expression is neutral. You can tell he's not enjoying this, not for one moment.

There are hundreds of people around him and cameras from the national press are trying to get their best image of him.

He's now 16 years old and he's about to be tried for murdering his girlfriend.

Luke's trial started in November 2004, and he was being tried as an adult, even though he wasn't.

He was 16.

He was charged with the murder of Jodie, possession of a knife and supplying cannabis.

He pled not guilty to all charges.

He lodged his alibi and incrimination of another or others unknown as his defence.

There were over 100 witnesses due to be called throughout the trial and stand before the judge, Lord Nimmo Smith.

Luke was 16 years old, the judge was 62. He was seasoned and respected.

The jury was made up of 15 men and women. They have 15 in Scotland, and they act on a majority verdict.

Luke's fate was in their hands.
